Chelsea Flower Show 2019 highlights: The CAMFED Garden

The Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) African Garden, which won a prestigious gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May, is now being installed at the Eden Project in Cornwall. The garden tells the story of how the Campaign for Female Education supports the most excluded girls and young women in rural sub-Saharan Africa to go to school, succeed, and become leaders and change-makers in their communities, including in climate-smart agriculture. The garden is due to open in the Mediterranean Biome at Eden on Friday, October 18.

The Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) today launched #SeeGrowth, an ambitious campaign that aims to raise funds to support women-led, climate smart agricultural businesses across Africa. Investing in the next generation of female agripreneurs is a proven way to foster healthier, wealthier communities and build resilience to climate change. The campaign will flourish together with CAMFED’s first ever Garden, which will be unveiled at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (21-25 May) and will live on at The Eden Project.

As part of a year of 25th anniversary celebrations, The Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) will unveil its first ever garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (21-25 May 2019). The CAMFED Garden, “Giving Girls in Africa a Space to Grow,” will feature vibrant colours and bold foliage, bringing rural Africa to central London. The garden will be created by acclaimed designer Jilayne Rickards, inspired by a her visit to a CAMFED partner community in Zimbabwe. Showcasing trees, crops and bulbs typical to Zimbabwe, along with an outdoor learning space, we’re thrilled that this unique garden will live on at the Eden Project in Cornwall after its debut in Chelsea.

The CAMFED Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show will showcase some of the latest science and technologies in climate-smart crops, developed with support from the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID). Our African-inspired plot will also shine a spotlight on female entrepreneurs and their expertise in climate resilient agriculture.

It is with immense gratitude for their commitment and knowledge that CAMFED is celebrating an inspiring partnership with the Eden Project, as we prepare for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. They are helping to grow, plant and sustain a unique garden, shining a spotlight on climate-smart, sustainable agriculture led by female farmers in Africa. The Eden Project has been involved from the very beginning, growing many of the tropical plants featured in the garden, and now the team is helping in the final days of planting. After next week’s London debut, this vibrant garden and its important message will live on in a dedicated section of the Eden Project in Cornwall.
