Step out of lockdown (virtually) and be transported back to the CAMFED Garden at the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show by watching our highlights video.

During these difficult times its vibrant colors, bold planting, and powerful message about female education and empowerment are sure to lift your spirits. The garden attracted a great deal of attention at last year’s leading horticultural event in London, not only winning a gold medal but also the coveted BBC/RHS People’s Choice Award in the ‘Space to Grow’ category.

“This garden was all about tackling gender inequality and poverty with the most positive messaging from CAMFED’s work in Africa. Covid has meant a drop in public funding, so if anyone is feeling generous maybe donate what you would have spent at Chelsea.” – Garden Designer Jilayne Rickards MSGD, MBALI

The 2020 Chelsea Flower Show is going ahead in a new format, which includes virtual garden tours, online demos and, of course, a look back on the highlights from previous years. Garden designer Jilayne Rickards was invited to reflect on the feat of bringing a corner of rural Zimbabwe to central London, on a recent episode of The RHS Gardening Podcast. The podcast also features the words of CAMFED Association member Beauty, who, with support and training, has become an expert in climate-smart agriculture and has been creating an uplift in nutrition, employment and school attendance in her community. Her farm was the inspiration for many of the 40 edible crops and trees that feature in the CAMFED Garden.

The CAMFED Garden lives on in the Mediterranean Biome at the Eden Project in Cornwall, which is temporarily closed, but continues to offer a range of online resources.

The garden is due to open in the Mediterranean Biome at Eden on Friday, October 18.

East of Eden: Inspiring partnership ensures legacy of CAMFED Garden

It is with immense gratitude for their commitment and knowledge that CAMFED is celebrating an inspiring partnership with the Eden Project, as we prepare for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. They are helping to grow, plant and sustain a unique garden, shining a spotlight on climate-smart, sustainable agriculture led by female farmers in Africa. The Eden Project has been involved from the very beginning, growing many of the tropical plants featured in the garden, and now the team is helping in the final days of planting. After next week’s London debut, this vibrant garden and its important message will live on in a dedicated section of the Eden Project in Cornwall.
