Lucy joined CAMFED in 1994, shortly after it was founded, and went on to become the CEO. In 2023, Lucy stepped aside as CEO, continuing as Executive Chair until stepping down from a formal role in July 2024. Lucy now champions CAMFED across a broad front, in making the case for girls’ education and gender equality.

Under Lucy’s leadership, CAMFED was awarded the Hilton Humanitarian Prize, the Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, and was recognized by the Development Assistance Committee of the OECD for best practice in taking development innovation to scale. In 2020, Lucy was awarded the Yidan Prize for Education Development alongside Angeline Murimirwa, for her contribution to gender equality in education.

Lucy is a founding member and former Co-Chair of the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative, and a member of the High-Level Steering Group of the Education Commission’s Workforce Initiative. She represented CAMFED on the Advisory Board of the Global Education Monitoring Report.

CAMFED Co-Executives join ‘Council of Luminaries’, announced at 2020 Yidan Prize Summit

On December 7, at the 2020 Yidan Prize Awards Presentation Ceremony and Summit, hosted virtually this year, CAMFED Co-Executives Angeline Murimirwa and Lucy Lake accepted the Yidan Prize for Education Development on behalf of everyone in our movement. They were invited to join the newly-formed Council of Luminaries which gathers 16 leading educational researchers and innovators to drive education progress globally.

Yidan Prize for Education Development awarded to CAMFED Co-Executives

On September 23rd, 2020, the Yidan Prize Foundation, a global philanthropic educational foundation inspiring future progress and change in education, named Angeline Murimirwa, CAMFED’s Executive Director – Africa, and Lucy Lake, CAMFED’s Chief Executive Officer, as 2020 laureates of the Yidan Prize for Education Development, the world’s largest prize in education.
