Angeline (Angie) Murimirwa, CAMFED’s CEO, and Lydia Wilbard, CAMFED’s Executive Director: Learning and Engagement, have spoken in a newly-released interview about the importance of recognizing and nurturing the power that resides in individuals and communities.

The video and article on Devex are the latest in its Hilton Humanitarian Prize Laureate Series. CAMFED was recognized with the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize in 2021.

‘The shifting of power into locally-led development’… I am sometimes wondering why are we even calling it a shift? It should begin there!

Hear from our leaders about positioning and sharing power

Angie and Lydia share some of the learnings from and achievements of our tried-and-tested model, powered by community action and Sisterhood:

  • 6.4 million children have been supported to go to school across Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe
  • >a quarter million graduates have joined our Sisterhood of women leaders, the CAMFED Association, now spearheading our movement
  • 27% of those educated women leaders belong to local, national and international decision-making bodies
  • 122K Community Champions partner with our young women leaders to rally support around vulnerable girls

As founding members of the Sisterhood, Angie and Lydia are experienced in recognizing the power that resides in proximate leadersexperts in ensuring children can learn and succeed.
