Young women to launch Agricultural Hub with land allocated by Chief Mushonga in Nyanga, Zimbabwe

NewsPublished on:

Chief Mushonga of Nyanga district, Zimbabwe, has presented more than five hectares of land to agriculture experts in the CAMFED Association of women leaders educated with CAMFED support.

This generous allocation will enable young women to establish a climate-smart Agricultural Hub, helping to create financial security and providing nutritious food to the community.

The hub will be a game-changer for us, offering a beacon of hope in our quest to overcome poverty. We envision that it will empower the network members to achieve economic independence, enabling us to make a more meaningful impact on vulnerable children.

A whole community endeavor

CAMFED Zimbabwe’s Co-Executive Directors, Justina Hama and Tafadzwa Mbishi, attended a handover ceremony to celebrate the land being granted to CAMFED graduates. Justina expressed heartfelt gratitude to Chief Mushonga for his commitment to supporting young women. She highlighted that this land allocation reflects the strong relationships that CAMFED Association members have built in their community, and the confidence that the local leadership has in them.

This land from Chief Mushonga is not just a gift; it is a symbol of trust and belief in [CAMFED Association members'] potential. I encourage you to stay united, work hard, and strive for excellence as you build the best Agricultural Hub in the region.

Growing a center for learning

At the event, CAMFED Association leaders outlined their vision for the Agricultural Hub, which they hope will serve as a demonstration and training center in the region. Young women will work together with Chief Mushonga and other community members to realize the potential of this venture improving food security, growing sustainable livelihoods, turning a profit, and using supporting more children to learn and thrive.

A bold vision for improving climate resilience and food security

Young women will deploy climate-smart techniques at the hub, to ensure its sustainability and resilience. Boreholes and water from a nearby river will support the use of drip irrigation. They will encourage water conservation and improve soil quality through planting trenches, mulching, intercropping and crop rotation.

Immediate priorities include drilling boreholes, constructing a residence for CAMFED Association members managing the hub, and implementing the first agriculture projects — including crop production and poultry farming.

In the longer term, the young women will look to construct greenhouses, rear sheep, goats and cattle, as well as venturing into beekeeping and fish farming.
