CAMFED is honored to be a beneficiary of The New York Times Communities Fund for the second year running since its relaunch from the Neediest Cases Fund in 2023. The only organization working internationally among this year’s chosen nonprofits, CAMFED was selected for its award-winning, grassroots-led model supporting girls to go to school, succeed and become leaders in their communities.

YOUNG WOMEN THRIVE: After graduation, we support young women to transition to secure work and leadership roles through the CAMFED Association—a sisterhood of over 275,000 educated women who support the next generation of girls and change the futures of their communities.

ENTIRE GENERATIONS THRIVE: We partner with governments to enhance national school systems, ensuring they better serve the needs of all children.

On September 19th, 2024, CAMFED attended the New York Times Communities Fund Launch Event at the New York Times’ offices. Fiona Mavhinga, Executive Director for CAMFED Association Development, joined representatives of other organizations that New York Times readers support through the Fund to discuss the powerful impact of this partnership on our work.

She shared her inspiring journey from being one of the first girls supported to go to school by CAMFED in rural Zimbabwe to co-founding the CAMFED Association of women leaders. Now heading up this unstoppable sisterhood, Fiona works with other CAMFED graduates to lead the charge for girls’ education across Africa.

This is the 113th year of The Communities Fund, which was rebranded from the Neediest Cases Fund in 2023. Since 1911, the Fund has raised more than $337M, all of which has been donated to social service agencies providing direct support to people in need, helping to change their lives.

This year, we are thrilled to be named alongside 8 other charities the Fund will support with their reader’s generosity: Feeding America, Per Scholas, Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New York, First Book, UJA-Federation of New York, Hispanic Federation, Children’s Aid, and OneGoal.
