CAMFED Chair appointed CMG in The Queen’s 2020 Birthday Honours
It was announced today that Miranda Curtis, Chair of CAMFED International, has been appointed as a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (CMG) in The Queen’s 2020 Birthday Honours List. This award is in recognition of her service to gender equality globally.
Miranda Curtis joined the CAMFED International Board in 2011 and took on the role of Chair in 2014. Miranda has overseen a transformative period of CAMFED’s development, in which it has scaled its work to benefit millions of girls and young women, and which has seen the CAMFED Association come to the fore as a new generation of leaders.
One of the highlights of recent times was Miranda’s commitment and support to CAMFED’s Garden at the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, “Giving Girls in Africa a Space to Grow”.
The Garden, designed by Jilayne Rickards, showcased CAMFED’s work with young women in the development of climate-smart agri-businesses.
The Garden won a Gold Medal and the People’s Choice Award, and lives on at the Eden Project in Cornwall, UK. Subsequently, CAMFED was recognised with the UN Global Climate Action award at COP25 for African women’s leadership on climate action, including as climate-smart Agriculture Guides.
In her capacity as Chair, Miranda continues to inspire CAMFED’s leadership to set game-changing ambitions and to deliver to the highest standards on behalf of its clients – girls and young women in sub-Saharan Africa.
The motto of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George is “Token of a Better Age” – an apposite reflection of the future made possible through Miranda’s contribution to CAMFED!
Alongside her role as Chair of CAMFED International, Miranda has previously served as Chair of Waterstones and Lead Non-Executive Director at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and is currently Deputy Chair of the RSC and of Garsington Opera, Trustee of the Institute for Government, and Non-Executive Director of Liberty Global and Liberty Latin America.
