Dafuloza

Primary Scholar, Malawi

Dafuloza lives with both parents who depend on farming for a living. She was the second born of her parents’ five children. Because the produce her parents grow is never enough to sell and eat for the whole year, her family struggles with both food and money. As such it’s always difficult for them to meet basic needs. Despite these challenges, Dafuloza still manages to wake up at 5 a.m. every day, help her parents in the garden, clean up around the home and leave for school by 7 a.m. Because of the family’s hardships, Dafuloza frequently goes to school on an empty stomach.

Since her childhood, Dafuloza has wanted to become a nurse. She was inspired by a matron whom she met while she was sick in the hospital. This ambition was just a dream to Dafuloza until CAMFED started supporting her education in Standard 5. Dafuloza was among 40 girls selected by the School Based Committee to benefit from CAMFED funds. She received a school uniform and exercise books, along with all of her school fees and tuition.

At Dafuloza’s school, the Mother Support Group works tirelessly to help children stay in school, learn and succeed.

Dafuloza’s Teacher Mentor also plays a vital role in her education. Together with the Mother Support Groups, the Teacher Mentor follows up when she notices that Dafuloza is not in school or experiencing other challenges.

Before CAMFED came to our school, I used to miss classes because I did not have a school uniform and my friends would laugh at me because I used to wear worn out clothes that made me look like a mad person. My parents could not afford to buy me decent clothes let alone school uniform.
