Elected to the position of CAMFED Association National Chairperson in September 2023, Shamsa Mkurungo heads up this sisterhood of more than 50,000 women leaders educated with CAMFED support in Tanzania. Together, they work to dismantle barriers to education, partnering with school, local and traditional authorities to galvanize action for vulnerable girls

Shamsa, herself supported to go to school by CAMFED, started her leadership journey when she was in Form 3 of secondary school by serving as an academic prefect. She also served in prominent roles during her time in college. Shamsa is secretary at Sisi Tanzania, an organization which deals with youth issues.

Since participating in training offered by CAMFED in 2021, Shamsa has served as a Learner Guide, delivering a life skills and self-development program at a secondary school. In her role as a Learner Guide Coordinator she has also supported nearly 40 other young women in their outreach. Shamsa holds a degree in Public Sector Accounting and Finance (BPSAF) from the Tanzania Institute of Accountancy (TIA) College.
