Malawian students win Kenya university scholarships
A group of 14 young women from Malawi—supported by CAMFED due to their vulnerable backgrounds—have graduated school and won scholarships to study at the prestigious United States International University Africa (USIU-Africa) in Nairobi, Kenya.
The students are taking up their higher education places with support from CAMFED and the Mastercard Foundation. Before traveling, they joined a televised event in Blantyre where they were congratulated by well wishers, including Dr. Levis Eneya from the Ministry of Education and Ida Deleza from the CAMFED Malawi Board.
The Ministry of Education has an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with CAMFED. When we have partners that are coming along to give [young people] the opportunity to study, even abroad, it’s something that we are very happy about.

Dr. Eneya commended CAMFED’s commitment to supporting girls and young women to achieve their potential both through school and university education—complementing Ministry efforts. He cited the fact that CAMFED Malawi is currently enabling 1,089 young women to attend universities nationally.

When they come back to Malawi, to their communities and families, the students will be able to support others as well. They will support their siblings. They are now role models, able to guide others.

CAMFED not only supports girls through school, but also in the transition to secure livelihoods and leadership, including through vocational skills training as a pathway to self-employment or jobs, and, in some cases, higher education. Disadvantaged young women can face many challenges at university, so CAMFED steps in with both practical and social support—including from those who have graduated before.
Seven CAMFED Association members from Malawi are already studying at the same university in Kenya. As part of a critical mass, these 21 students can support one another, keeping the network’s spirt of sisterhood going, even while abroad.
