Lisa Kandanda, a member of the CAMFED Association of women leaders and a Public Administration student at university, has won the televised People’s Budget Competition 2022 in Zambia.

She triumphed over two other finalists and hundreds of competition entrants aged between 18 and 35, who were invited to submit their proposals for a national budget by The Centre for Trade Policy and Development, Zambia.

Lisa received support from CAMFED to go to secondary school and now university. Her victory is not only a personal one, but is also a victory for every once-marginalized young woman, who through education can be seen and heard, and her expertise recognized.

“Societies that value men and women as equals are safer and healthier… My government demonstrated a strong will and commitment to promoting women and youth into high positions of responsibility in the public sector.”

In her final remarks to a panel of independent professional judges, Lisa set out her priorities for remodelling Zambia into a middle income country, including:

  • A 20% increase to the education budget to help build 120 schools, recruit teachers, build teacher accommodation, and provide quality education.
  • An increase in the number of girls being educated to 45,000 in 2023 from ~43,520 in 2022 to foster gender equality and the growth of earnings.
  • Investing in renewable energy including solar power.
  • More spending on healthcare, including the updating of ICT systems in the sector.
  • Agriculture investment, including in irrigation (facilitating a move away from dependency on rainfall) and sustainable farming techniques.
