Vivian: I’ve seen first-hand the impact of CAMFED’s programs

Queen Mother, traditional leader, Ghana

2 minute read

I am Elizabeth Vivian Awuni, Queen Mother* of Gurigo electoral area in Bongo Central, Ghana. I advocate for the welfare of women and children in the community.

I stepped up to this role because I like working with children, especially girls. I am an active member of the CAMFED Community Development Committee (CDC), where I listen to children and young people to understand their problems and help select students for CAMFED support. We Queen Mothers go from school to school to talk to girls and boys about their education. We highlight the risks of early marriage and unplanned pregnancy, and the students listen to us and ask questions.

If a girl is pushing forward at school, I want to help.

In Ghana we have never had a president who is a woman and I want that to change. If we educate girls, they will be able to become future presidents and ministers of Ghana. So I love seeing girls in school.

I love CAMFED’s programs so much, they have helped so many girls.

I’ve seen first-hand the impact of CAMFED’s programs. Girls tell us about when they start getting their periods, their parents have no money to buy them menstrual supplies. But because CAMFED gives them menstrual supplies for free, they are able to continue with school.

Bongo, our district, used to have one of the highest early pregnancy rates in the Upper East region, but since CAMFED introduced the Learner Guide model, early pregnancies have decreased and more girls are staying in school.

CAMFED wants to help students learn well so that they can reach their dreams in future. I love it!
