CAMFED was selected for its award-winning, grassroots-led model supporting girls in rural communities in Africa to go to school, succeed and become leaders guiding the next generation through school. It’s the only organization working internationally among this year’s chosen non-profits.

Yet only 5 out of every 100 girls from families living in extreme poverty in rural Africa will complete secondary school.*

CAMFED partners with communities to provide individualized financial and material support to girls, ensuring they have everything they need to thrive in school. We build a nurturing support network around them, including mentorship from recent graduates.
Together, we then support graduates to transition to secure work and leadership roles through the CAMFED Association — a sisterhood of more than 355,000 educated women, who in turn send more girls to school.
They become teachers, health care professionals, and leaders of sustainable businesses, providing opportunity, tackling poverty and inequality, and transforming the futures of their communities for good.

This is the 115th annual campaign of the Fund, which coincides with the 175th anniversary of The New York Times. Since 1911, the Fund has raised nearly $365M, all of which has been donated to social service agencies providing direct support to people in need, helping to change their lives.
This year, we are thrilled to be named alongside seven other charities the Fund will support through their reader’s generosity: Per Scholas, Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New York, First Book, UJA-Federation of New York, Children’s Aid, OneGoal and the American Journalism Project.
