Hear from Elizabeth in Zambia - Video Transcript

Elizabeth, secondary student, Zambia I would like to finish school with good grades [and] go to a university to study medicine.

Funny Lulamba, Teacher Mentor, Zambia What makes me happy is when I see girls coming to school and being educated.

Elizabeth Mostly I grew up with my Grandma. Most of our family members, we depend on farming. The challenges that I’ve faced, it’s just because of the money.

They [CAMFED] started supporting me when I was in Grade 10. For every term they give us menstrual pads, even books they do give us, full uniform they give us, soap they give us. That was quite a relief for me and my parents.

CAMA [the CAMFED Association] — it has helped me in a lot of ways. They really motivate us to focus on school. They’re very good role models for us.

Funny My name is Funny. When it comes to CAMFED, I’m the Teacher Mentor. Why I became a Teacher Mentor is I have a passion for the girls, and I could see that in schools there are a lot of girls with a lot of challenges. Since we have a lot of girls coming from village places, most of the girls, they even lack food.

As a Teacher Mentor, we do give material support, and then the other one is counseling. Most of these girls who are vulnerable, they could confide in me, talk to me, and they do that. We even visit them if they drop out of school [and help them return].

When the girl child is educated, the whole family will be educated. The whole family will be developed. It makes me happy when I see a lot of girls being in school, because that’s what we encourage them. That’s what we do tell them, and I become happy.

Elizabeth She’s a good woman, I can say. She just, like, motivates us. She mostly teaches us how to take care of ourselves.

What makes me happy? Mostly seeing my family happy. I’m the first born — I’m a role model to them [my siblings]. They really get motivated by me because they want to reach where I am now. It feels nice, it feels great!
