By the age of nine, Doreen had tragically lost both parents. Forced to leave the village where they grew up, Doreen and her four siblings moved in with their grandmother. Fearful that she would not live long enough to see her grandchildren through to adulthood, Doreen’s grandmother felt that she had no choice but to arrange a marriage for her.
