Malawi Tertiary Education Appeal

The Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) works across five countries in sub-Saharan Africa to support vulnerable girls to go to school, succeed and become leaders of change within their communities.

CAMFED Malawi urgently needs to support a cohort of ambitious young women working towards tertiary education qualifications in 2019 and 2020. These women have already taken the challenging first step of securing places in further education institutions, but they now lack funding to complete their courses. They are training to be teachers, nurses, journalists, agricultural entrepreneurs, scientists and technologists; professions vital for Malawi's development.

As Malawi's tertiary education enrolment rate is under 1%, and only 30% of students at public universities are female, these women will be able to make an enormous difference within their communities. Our data show that these women are also very likely to re-invest their time and income to support and mentor others.

It costs approximately £600 to support one young woman for one year of tertiary education study in Malawi - including all fees and living costs. We are initially looking to support 40 of these high-achieving women.
