Help us rebuild the lives of women affected by Cyclone Idai

Cyclone Idai and associated flooding in Malawi and Zimbabwe is devastating the communities of CAMFED-supported women and girls. Homes have been destroyed, businesses have been swept away, and schools, boarding facilities and classrooms damaged. Schools that are still standing are being repurposed to provide emergency shelter, meaning classes are disrupted or cancelled. Reports are still coming in and the numbers of those affected are likely to increase as the true toll of this disaster unfolds.

My Story

The full impact of this disaster on communities like Steria's in Zomba is yet to be seen. Much of this year's harvest will be lost and families reliant on their own crops will suffer the most. Before the end of the year, meals will become more and more meagre across southern Africa as families are forced to eke out supplies...

Disruption to food and water supplies, health services, fuel and transport infrastructure are already affecting thousands of people living in affected areas, including CAMFED-supported girls. Long-term, this will have severe consequences for health and access to education as household incomes and the availability of nutritious food are decimated. Sanitation-related outbreaks of dangerous diseases are also likely in the coming weeks.

The true size of this disaster is still to be seen, but we can start to rebuild the lives of those affected.

Our help will support the most vulnerable children on their journey through school by providing communities with vital food and supplies. We’ll help entrepreneurs rebuild their businesses, who in turn will help their communities to recover from the devastation.
