Key Duties and Responsibilities:
The Impact Team has responsibility for delivering CAMFED’s monitoring, evaluation and research strategy for the improvement of CAMFED’s programme, compliance to donors and the effective communication of CAMFED’s impact as well as to contribute to the international evidence base. As a key member of the team based in the UK you will be part of a vibrant team that works across five countries in Africa where CAMFED’s programme is delivered. Your role as Impact Manager will be to support the work of the Impact Team internationally in providing quality, timely, accurate data and insights to programme, donor, government and other stakeholders. The Impact Team regularly conducts and commissions research in CAMFED’s partner schools and communities, including large-scale school-based and household surveys, for the collection of quantitative and qualitative data for research and evaluation purposes. A particular focus of the role will be to play a leading role in the development, management and implementation of research carried out by CAMFED and by external partners.
Specific areas of work include the following:
Assist the Head of Impact and the Senior Impact Manager with the management of the UK Impact Team and the delivery of the Team’s roles and responsibilities within the organisation.
Analyse and write up quantitative and qualitative data for programmatic, research and reporting purposes, and support the presentation and communication of CAMFED’s work.
Design, manage and deliver research activities, both quantitative and qualitative, including research design, project management, technical support, enumerator training, field research, analysis and report writing.
Manage relationships with research partners, including short-term contracts as well as longer term, strategic partnerships.
Draw up terms of reference for external organisations and individuals to carry out research activities related to CAMFED’s programmes.
Contribute to the design of monitoring, evaluation and research activities and research tools related to CAMFED’s programmes.
Identify implications of findings and ensure that issues are brought to the attention of senior managers.
Build the capacity of CAMFED’s Impact Teams internationally on issues related to research methods and methodologies, data gathering, analysis and interpretation, including regular liaison and the provision of technical assistance.
Line managing an Impact Officer in the UK who, through regular liaison with CAMFED’s Impact Teams internationally, provides technical and coordination support in the monitoring and evaluation of CAMFED’s programmes, including compiling and analysing information for reports to donors and programme managers and maintaining the programme database.
Provide input to proposals in matching proposed activities with appropriate indicators (in logframes, for example) and associated budgets.
Work collegially with finance, development and fundraising teams to ensure quality, timely, accurate data is provided across the organisation.
Other duties as required by the Head of Impact and Senior Impact Manager.
The successful candidate will have:
5+ years’ experience in a related field
Demonstrated skills in programme-related research (quantitative and qualitative) from design to field research to analysis and reporting
Strong project management and line management skills
An understanding of international development and gender equality
An ability to analyse complex data in a technical area and to summarise and communicate this in ways that are accessible to a range of audiences
Excellent writing skills
Ability to deliver training
Excellent numeracy skills, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel or statistical software packages, such as SPSS, Stata and R
Willingness and ability to work in a fast-paced team, finding pragmatic solutions, where necessary
Eligibility to work in the UK
Desirable qualifications include:
Prior work experience in monitoring and evaluation
A research degree (Masters or Doctorate) in the social sciences
Personal experience of conducting primary research in Sub-Saharan Africa
Experience of using software for qualitative data analysis, such as NVivo
Experience of working with databases
Prior work experience in Africa
Prior work experience for a commercial or not-for-profit organisation in a relevant area
Experience of working with research and evaluation agencies and consultancies
Publication record in relevant areas
This position requires the ability to travel internationally, up to a maximum of 6-8 weeks per year.
